Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have proven their stuff as civil liberty advocates worthy of emulation. The character they exhibited in the course of exposing and fighting inhumane atrocities is something every civil right activist must possess including those at the forefront of campaign against racism and discrimination against colored people.
Members of groups like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) have plenty of lessons to learn from these great and noble men. Opportunities to show the stuff one is made of, as the one that came the way of Lacey and Larkin, do not come everyday. Sometimes, they show up once in a life-time.
It all started on a beautiful day while both men were going about their business being journalists by profession. Fortunately, they got to know about the some of the many atrocities of an important society figure, County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and a grand jury maneuverings to make him escape punishment for violating the rights of fellow citizens.
Both men entertained no delay in exposing him and all those involved. This did not go down well with the County who then masterminded their forceful and illegal arrest in the middle of the night while in their homes sleeping. They were both maltreated but never gave up.
They resolved to see the County suffer and pay for his mischief. To ensure this, they filed for a court hearing at the United State Court of Appeal demanding from the County the sum of $3.75 million for maltreatment suffered.
The most interesting part of this real life experience is what both men decided to do with the money after their victory in court. Critics were already calling them names such as money-crazy activists, money-drunk journalists among many others. The thought of these detractors was that Lacey and Larkin wanted the millions rather than justice for crime against innocent citizens. Many of these critics are now fans of the journalists after the two gentlemen dedicated the money to assisting civil rights groups in Arizona and beyond. Lacey and Larkin took no dine from the money thus proving to all and sundry they are no money-crazy but liberty-and-justice drunk.
To those who think Lacey and Larkin did the above for the fame of it, that is not the case. Both have already made a name for themselves before this incidence.
The popular Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media can be traced to them; they co-founded the two organizations. No one knows how both men came together and form such a formidable team. It must be a case of birds of a feather flock together.
To the question of racism and discrimination against colored people, the resilience and selflessness demonstrated by Lacey and Larkin is needed among the character traits of men and women in groups like NAACP.
There is hardly any human endeavor or organization where colored discrimination are not rampant; sports and government agencies are not left out. Until we have men and women like Lacey and Larkin, victory is not in view.
Everyone’s Rights Are Under Attack
Two strong advocates for immigration reform are Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin who happen to be two Arizona natives. The two men met at Arizona University when they took over the University newspaper. They were so successful that they took the newspaper national and quit the University early. They used their media contacts to continuously promote immigration reform and advocate for Hispanics to be allowed to be provided pathways to citizenship.
While Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin promote immigration reform, they often come up against Sheriff Joseph Arpaio. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have made a living reporting on the various misdeeds this awful man is guilty of committing. They reported on how he would often take justice into his own hands when dealing with Hispanics. He was routinely allowing Hispanics to be beaten on the streets and also is guilty of burning a Hispanic home to the ground when he felt that they were involved with a drug cartel. He is guilty of allowing pregnant women to die in his prison cells by refusing them proper medical care. He is also guilty of treating Hispanics like concentration camp workers by forcing them to work in the Arizona summer heat to the point that they fall down and die.
Sheriff Joseph Arpaio showed how cruel he can be when he violated the freedom of speech that belonged to Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. He would use two illegal warrants to illegally enter the homes of these two men. Once he was there, he held them at gunpoint and threatened their lives if they did not stop reporting these things.
This resulted in a lawsuit that would be the starting capital for the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. They now produce the Front Page Confidential to fight for our free speech.
