Sheldon Lavin and The History Behind OSI Group

OSI Group is known for being one of the world’s largest supplier of food globally. OSI employs over 20,000 employees and has 65 facilities internationally. OSI started out as a small ,family run, butcher shop, but is now a multi-billion dollar corporation. The ancestry of OSI is deeply rooted in the American immigration history.

German immigrants settled in Chicago, Illinois and this made up a quarter of the city’s consensus. A man by the name of Kolschowsky, opened a small butcher shop within 2 years of residing in Chicago. His shop served the community well and within a decade Kolschowsky decided it was time to expand his business into the wholesale sector.

Years of success caused a small revamping of Kolschowsky’s business and Otto and Sons was born. But with the changing of times, modern suburbs was popping up everywhere. With the demands of the world that pushed businesses to seek ways to upscale and keep up with the demands of society, a rare business collaboration was formed, 2 family businesses, Otto and Sons and McDonald’s.

Otto and Sons moved from the position of regional supplier to international supplier; but as the demands of the world increased, so did the need of food preservation as it went from the warehouse to its destination. Flash freezing became the answer, In 1875, the company shifted the leadership and name of the company as they welcomed Sheldon Lavin. That is when Otto and Sons became OSI Group.

The Growth of McDonald’s is what broke the barrier into international territory. Sheldon Lavin became the CEO and Sheldon Lavin chairman of OSI Group in the 1980’s. The growth of the company has led the company to make Forbes 2016 list of the biggest private owned businesses. Sheldon Lavin is no stranger to the investment world and worked with Otto and Sons on the investment end until their retirement.

OSI history dates back over a century ago. The history is important as it shows the relevance of economic growth and technological advances from then until now. First a butcher shop, then Otto and Sons, currently OSI Group. Sheldon Lavin helped lead the company and break barriers that no other company had yet ventured into during the economic growth that started from the birth of the first McDonald’s and on as both companies evolved.

Sheldon Lavin Is Pleased To Announce GenOSI’s New Plant

GenOSI is the Philippines flagship company of OSI Industries, a billion-dollar international meat processing and wholesale company based in Chicago. GenOSI recently completed construction of a brand new plant with updated equipment and larger storage and shipment capacity than an older facility that had previously been there, and OSI Industries CEO Sheldon Lavin was pleased with the project. According to Meat + Poultry, Lavin said this facility added to the capabilities of OSI to deliver meat products to the Philippines market that are cost-effective while also made with the highest quality and meeting the top food safety standards. GenOSI CEO Fred Uytengsu expressed equal gratitude to Lavin for helping fund the construction.

OSI Industries has been in business for over 100 years, yet even more striking is that Sheldon Lavin has been there for over four decades and during that time the company has had almost no overturns at the top. In fact, most employees have been happy to stay on long-term thanks to the atmosphere Lavin and his fellow executives have maintained there. Lavin has certainly been keeping company equipment and marketing strategies up to date over the years, but he’s never changed his commitment to people first, a foundation that OSI Industries was built on.

OSI Industries was previously owned by Otto Kolschowsky’s family from 1909 into the 1970s, and just before Sheldon Lavin became familiar with them they became the meat supplier to McDonald’s. Lavin was actually in financial consulting at the time with previous experience in investment banking, and Otto & Sons sought his services to get financing for a bigger processing plant to output more meat for McDonald’s. Lavin was even asked to become an owner in the company by the bank who was financing them, but he declined the offer at the time because he wanted to carry on in consulting, but he did become more involved on a part-time basis with the company. As he did so, he helped make both man-power and finances more efficient at OSI and the owners made him CEO several years later, and upon retiring they sold him their shares.

Ever since taking over as Chairman and CEO, Sheldon Lavin has grown OSI Industries up to where it is today with 55 plants in 17 countries, and 23 more that are served. Lavin’s standards of food and workplace safety were recognized by the British Safety Council in 2016 with the Globe of Honour award. A university in India recognized his executive work and philanthropy at their Global Vision Academy with the Global Visionary award.

OSI Group and David McDonald Make One Heck Of A Team For Restaurant Chains in China

OSI Group has been in China for many years and because they have been such a blessing to the businesses of China, the group is focused on becoming a leading contender for global food chains. In a recent year while hosting the Olympic games in Beijing, the group supplied more than 113 tons of food to help provide for the Olympic games. It was during this period of time that McDonalds had not received one complaint regarding the 5 food items they provided.

OSI Group had provided the chicken, pork, beef, eggs and onion for the Olympic games. When the company received no complaints, they were able to spread their business further down the line. The business is now helping to supply food and drinks to other chains like Starbucks, Burger King, Subway and even Papa John’s.

The group is focused on maintaining their clientele while working to bring in more people. The people who are currently receiving the food from OSI China are sometimes in need of finding a new and unique way of reconstructing the business by updating menus and providing new foods.

The main goal of OSI Group is to become one of the best food distributors in the world. They hope to one day to provide the products and services to major food networks while maintaining a cost effective business. David McDonald is a firm believer in the effectiveness of his customers but he also knows that you have to be able to make mistakes and failures along the way. By creating this performance of the business, you are able to learn from the valuable lessons that failure and mistakes bring you.

If you don’t make mistakes and learn from them, your business can not improve and move on from the mistake. There is something to be said about if at first you don’t succeed. This theory is what has helped OSI group China to be able to create a lasting business relationship with not only the McDonalds Group but with the other well known businesses they are working for.

David McDonald has been working for the business for over 30 years and the same goal that the business has today is the same goal they had when he first joined the business. To become the number one provider of food products, David works to come up with new ideas and suggestions that will help to bring success to the group.
